Seeing an uncredited version of Tobias Wong’s Just Another Rich Kid Cokespoon #2 on social media this morning hit a bit harder than I expected. I’d forgotten that Henry Urbach shopped a bunch of Tobi’s work for SFMOMA from CITIZEN Citizen [whose online store looks like it’s been zombified by comment spam and turned into a crpyto/cas1no spam factory; our online world is not aging well.]
The Bulletproof Quilted Duvet (2004), though, was a gift of Josée Lepage for Urbach’s Tobias Wong memorial show in 2011. SFMOMA’s object image is only of the duvet folded in half? And a bunch of the objects don’t have images at all? At least Dwell’s coverage of the show survives. Wong is wrapped in this duvet in the Dean Kaufman photo with his Felix Perfect Lovers clocks. I don’t think it was ever a product.
SFMOMA seemed like the largest collection of Wong’s work, but I just saw that in 2025 the Cooper Hewitt acquired 72 objects after the 2022-23 Tobias Wong show at the Museum of Vancouver. That includes OG glass chairs from Dean Kaufman and Yoko Ikeno and some sketches and schematics stacked together, but also five paper cups printed to look like crystal, each counted separately. Anyway, they’re organizing an exhibition in 2027.
