Bush Baby

Damn, George W. Bush’s painting of that baby really did look like Alice Neel’s babies.

an alice neel screenprint of a painting is mostly in the right half of the sheet. a white mother, barely sketched in in blue, with dark shoulder length hair under the line of a bandana sits on the floor with two bald, more fully illustrated babies in front of her. the baby on the left is twisted, its back to the artist, its legs off to the left in an impossible way, red shoes, staring back at the woman. the other baby on the lower right site facing the artist, blue pants painted in, and a look of dumbfounded terror or surprised blankness, you know how babies get, staring straight at the artist and hence the audience. the multicolored mottling of the babies' flesh is a screenprint translation of the painterly technique neel was known for.
