Once the
New Yorker publishes something online, it generously keeps it available indefinitely. It does not, however, allow searching or browsing of its online archive.
If, fortuitously, an article is linked to during the week of its print publication, the whole Googling world gains a window into existence. Fortuity [sic], thy name is greg.org. In
December 2003, I began posting a link index for each issue of the
New Yorker. For preceding issues, I am gradually adding indices by reverse engineering the URL for each article. In the interim, even though it inordinately skews the database toward Anthony Lane- and Paul Goldberger-fawning (and Adam Gopnik-jibing), I have included posts which include a
New Yorker link.
Even if I cannot aspire to the greatness of other
New Yorker bibliographers--
Menckenmania associate editor/polymath Gail Shivey comes to mind--I hope that readers find this ersatz index useful.
Links, comments, corrections, and, someday, legal defense fund contributions, are welcome.
It definitely does
not go without saying that the nymdb is not authorized by or affiliated with the
New Yorker, Conde Nast, or any member of the Newhouse, Remnick, Brown, Shawn, or Ross families.
